Along with international food, an Elvis impersonator and prizes will be on hand at the fifth annual Taste of St. Celestine festival.

The event runs from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. Sept. 12 at St. Celestine Catholic Church, located at 3020 N. 76th Court.

Nine different kinds of ethnic food will be sold at the event, including Vietnamese fried rice and egg rolls made by the Rev. Paul Cao’s mother.

Polish sausage, kraut and pierogies will be on hand again. Greek gyros, which weren’t a part of the Taste last year, will be back at this year’s event. Homemade sweets, fried dough, ice cream and coffee will be sold as well.

It costs a dollar to enter the event and food tickets are a dollar each. Food and drinks sold at the event will cost between one to three tickets.

Nancy Mueller, the church’s business manager, said all of the proceeds from the event go back into the church.

“This is one of our large yearly fundraisers to help with operating expenses and it also brings the whole community together,” she said.

Along with food, there will be live entertainment in St. Celestine School’s gym. Performances are planned from members of Maiden Street School of Irish Dance and the Barefoot Hawaiian dance group. A 14-year-old St. Celestine parishioner, Hugo Colin, will be doing a tribute to 1950s-era Elvis.

Colin said he got into Elvis through his mother who was big fan and played his constantly in the house.

“By the time I was four, I knew all of Elvis’ songs,” he said.

He started out performing by lip-syncing Elvis songs, but now sings them on his own. He says he prefers Elvis songs from the 1950s, and that’s what he’ll be performing at the Taste of St. Celestine.

“I’ll be doing some songs I’ve been working on over the summer,” he said. “I like doing ballads, but I’ll probably sing ‘Jailhouse Rock’ and ‘Hound Dog.'”

All of the entertainers will be performing for free, but will accept donations to cover their expenses.

There’ll also be bingo as well as kid-focused entertainment.

Barbara Mares, the church’s pastoral associate, who helped organize the event, said the Taste of St. Celestine is special compared to other food-related social events in the village.

“Ours is almost like a reunion and it’s an end of the summer kickoff to the new school year,” she said. “It brings back a lot of alumni from years past.”

In the past, she said they’ve had more than a thousand people attend the event. She hopes their new raffle will draw even more — or at least get people to purchase raffle tickets.

The first-place winner of the raffle gets to choose between a $500 cash prize, donated by Belmont Funeral Home, or a 40-inch Samsung Smart HDTV, donated by The Elms Funeral Home.

The second-place raffle winner gets the remaining prize.

Raffle tickets are currently being sold and will be sold at the event until 9 p.m., with the drawing taking place at 9:45 p.m. The winner does not have to be present.
