Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Welcome to RedEye’s “Song of the Day,” an ongoing feature where music reporter Josh Terry or another RedEye staff member highlights something they’re listening to. Some days the track will be new, and some days it will be old. No matter what, each offering is something you should check out. Check back every weekday for a new song and subscribe to the Spotify playlist below.

Looking for live music this week? You’re in luck because rock ‘n’ roll mainstays Barrence Whitfield and the Savages are playing not one but two shows in Chicago. First, the band will perform Wednesday at Schubas and then Thursday at SPACE. For fans of garage rock, rockabilly and R&B, the two gigs will be absolute must-sees. I’ve been lucky enough to see the group a handful of times before, and every single show it seems as if the atmosphere is increasingly energetic and electric.

While the now-revitalized group had its heyday in Boston during the ’80s, the core members are still kicking and show no signs of slowing down. With its just released full-length “Under The Savage Sky,” Barrence Whitfield and the Savages proves it can still make toe-tapping and powerful garage rock that feels like a swift kick to the teeth. To see what I mean, just listen to album cut “The Claw.” It’s a dense, efficient dose of screaming guitar riffs and Whitfield’s still-commanding howl.

Check out the song below and buy tickets to the band’s Schubas show here and its Space show here.

In concert: Sept. 2 at Schubas, Sept. 3 at SPACE.
