Getting your Trinity Audio player ready...

Full disclosure: I am a fan of Lupe Fiasco. I think his 2006 effort “Food and Liquor” is one of the finest Chicago albums ever, and his latest, “Tetsuo & Youth,” is a strong contender to make my 2015 best-of list (and hopefully yours too). That said, he’s had a pretty hit-and-miss career so far, sometimes due to him sticking his foot in his mouth and other times due to letting his creative impulses take a backseat to major label demands. One such album that I’m not too fond of for that second reason (and many others can back me up here) is his 2011 full-length “Lasers.”

It’s not that “Lasers” was bad or anything, it’s just that, in my opinion, it was too polished, and sometimes its experiments did not work. Too often it seemed as if he was trying to secure a radio pop-rap hit rather than make a cohesive album, as you can hear on the singles “The Show Goes On” and “Words I Never Said,” to name a few. Reasonable people can disagree, as there are some good moments on the record, but the fact remains that many view it as a total disappointment.

Now Fiasco himself, who’s probably really tired of the blowback for that record, has vowed to destroy all physical copies of the album to “unmake” it. Posting to his Facebook page yesterday, the 33-year-old rapper announced the #LaserHaters campaign, where fans send him their CD to be then incinerated with actual lasers. Seriously. Here’s his full statement below.

(function(d, s, id) { var js, fjs = d.getElementsByTagName(s)[0]; if (d.getElementById(id)) return; js = d.createElement(s); js.id = id; js.src = “//connect.facebook.net/en_US/sdk.js#xfbml=1&version=v2.3”; fjs.parentNode.insertBefore(js, fjs);}(document, ‘script’, ‘facebook-jssdk’));

My 3rd musically related thing I want to accomplish this year is not to make another album but to do something waaaay…

If he’s serious, it’s quite the stunt. If anything, though, there are records way more deserving of the laser treatment than “Lasers.” In fact, why not just send him Tyga’s latest full-length? That’d make more sense.
