player ready...From its 2009 beginnings to its 2013 demise, Chicago’s Kids These Days seemed like one of the most promising acts the city had seen in years. While the band split up at the height of its hype, its members have since gone on to do bigger and better things—seriously impressive considering the hip-hop/rock/jazz fusion group was a septet. With the ex-KTD alums in Marrow releasing “The Gold Standard” this week, we figured it’s as good a time as any to check on what these seven talented youngsters are up to now.
Vic Mensa—Rapper
Finally able to primarily pursue a solo career, Mensa’s recent output has made his star rise exponentially with Kanye West and Sia collaborations as well as festival headlining slots and a “Saturday Night Live”; appearance. With his album “Traffic,” out soon, Mensa’s taking over the world.
Nico Segal — Trumpeter
Now known as Donnie Trumpet, the virtuosic horn player toured with Frank Ocean and helmed “Surf,” the masterful album from the Social Experiment.
Liam Kazar — Guitarist-singer
Since Kazar put an end to Kids These Days, he’s managed to find a better songwriting outlet in Marrow. When he’s not doing that, he’s touring with Tweedy, from father-son combo Jeff and Spencer Tweedy.
Macie Stewart — Keyboardist-singer
Stewart splits her time between Marrow and Homme, the awesome art-rock duo she formed with Liam Kazar’s sister, Sima Cunningham. She’s also toured with Chance the Rapper.
Lane Beckstrom — Bassist
When he’s not playing in Marrow, you can catch Beckstrom making hip-hop beats under the moniker Lane, playing with his afro-beat funk group Ransome or, occasionally, serving as the touring bassist for the Social Experiment.
J.P. Floyd — Trombonist
Floyd now toots a mean bone for local soul pop outfit The O’My’s. He’s also gone on marquee tours with Frank Ocean and most recently, Bette Midler. The kid’s versatile.
Greg Landfair — Drummer
Most recently, Landfair, who plays like he’s a human Energizer Bunny, has made for an absolutely electric drummer with the Social Experiment. When that group isn’t recording or touring, he’s putting on his super fun Stix Jam Nights in Chicago or touring with TDE crooner-rapper SZA.
