Welcome to RedEye’s “Song of the Day,” an ongoing feature where music reporter Josh Terry or another RedEye staff member highlights something they’re listening to. Some days the track will be new, and some days it will be old. No matter what, each offering is something you should check out. Now that Chicago is on the tail end of its stacked festival season, it’s tough to take stock of all the awesome performances we’ve trudged through mud, rain and heat for. I could count Chance the Rapper’s triumphant homecoming Pitchfork set or Paul McCartney’s play-the-hits party at Lolla, but my most fond festival memory is seeing Mr Twin Sister bring out the Saturday storm at this year’s Pitchfork Music Festival.
I didn’t really set out to see Mr Twin Sister, as I’ve always been more partial to when the band went by just Twin Sister and released more traditional indie pop. But when I saw the newly renamed and reimagined Mr Twin Sister play songs from its 2014 self-titled album, I was absolutely floored. Since the name change, Mr Twin Sister, who perniciously stylizes its moniker without the period after “Mr,” have implemented a lot more esoteric electronic flourishes and European dance music into its signature sound. On record, it’s at first a kind of jarring shift, but live, everything comes together perfectly.
There’s no better example of this than the live rendition of “In the House of Yes.” It’s an absolutely hypnotizing track, with a physical, all-encompassing rhythm that thumps the arrangement into complete dance-floor euphoria. As the band played the song Saturday afternoon at Pitchfork, the rain started to fall. While the storm got way worse after its set, that few minutes dancing and not caring about getting soaked is surely going to be one of the best moments of my summer. Listen to the song below.
