The Morton Grove Police Department is encouraging residents and business owners to participate in a free home security survey that will examine home safety and help prevent break-ins.
Through the survey process, the examination includes an assessment of the landscaping, windows, entry points, the inside property and a number of other areas, Police Commander Paul Yaras said. The result is a list of possible weak spots and advice for what needs to do to prevent a burglary.
“We will never make a recommendation for any specific [security] company,” Yaras said, adding that most companies in and around town are reputable in providing reliable protection
Despite recent burglaries involving both auto and residential break-ins, he stated the department is “not seeing an increase” in crime compared to last year’s numbers. Currently, the numbers are “consistent” with last year around this time, he explained.
“Bigger times for burglaries are around the holidays because they figure people aren’t around,” Yaras said. “They don’t stay in one area because they know it will make it easier to get caught. What they don’t realize is that we team up and share information. We’re always keeping an eye out for patterns.”
Those interested in a home security survey can contact the police department at its non-emergency phone number, 847-470-5208.
