Welcome to RedEye’s “Song of the Day,” an ongoing feature where music reporter Josh Terry or another RedEye staff member highlights something they’re listening to. Some days the track will be new, and some days it will be old. No matter what, each offering is something you should check out. Check back every weekday for a new song and subscribe to the Spotify playlist below.
Ever since I started RedEye Song of the Day, I knew I wanted to write about two of my favorite about-to-break-out Chicago rappers, Probcause and Saba. Conveniently, “M.I.A.” this week’s awesome collaboration between the two, means I get to kill two birds with one post.
The track, which is set into motion by a vibrant footwork-inspired beat courtesy of producer Drew Mantia, finds Probcause indulging in some spitfire verbal gymnastics. For instance, take this alliteration-heavy sample, “Pat my passport in my pocket, pose on the platform/Peace to the people who show some backbone.” Later on, Saba, the 21-year-old MC responsible for one of my favorite 2014 mixtapes “ComfortZone,” hops on the track to deliver an equally impressive verse. If you want to see two local artists nearing the top of their respective games and having a lot of fun with it, this song is for you.
Check it out below, and if you dig it, Probcause’s new album “Drifters” is out today.
