Thank you Officer Byrne and other Concerned Citizens!
This is the time and opportunity for us to give thanks from the bottom of our hearts to a local trusted and skilled police officer in our community and other concerned citizens, who also gave from their hearts to assist us in a time of need.
Our 6-year-old American shepherd “Luna” is terrified of lightning and thunder. Try what we can we have never been able to move her past those fears, so all we have been able to do is try to get her to the basement or any dark quiet spot quickly when nature descends upon us with it aerial bombardment of lightning and thunder. On Friday, Aug. 14, we weren’t so lucky, and Luna was outside when a surprise storm came upon us. She was terrified and ran from the aerial display which lasted more than seven hours.
It was a night without sleep for her and for us with many prayers to arch-angels to watch over, protect and keep out of harm’s way our beloved four-legged partner. When morning came we continued our search throughout Barrington Hills and notified the police stations in Barrington Hills, Fox River Grove and Barrington. Thirty minutes after notifying the village of Barrington police of our missing dog we received a call from the dispatcher informing us a dog meeting the description of Luna had been called in by a “concerned citizen” seeing her loose, confused and bedraggled from a night of terror and fear. She was now in an area almost four miles from our home and only a few hundred meters from my office. While understandably disoriented and far from home, how she found her way toward my office also seems to be a miracle of unspoken words and hidden energies of communications between man and animal.
Office Byrne was the first responder to the concerned citizen’s call. He first spotted Luna near the parking lot behind the Barn of Barrington and was waiting there patiently for us to arrive and retrieve our “spirit dog.” But, then Luna was spooked by a jogger prior to our arrival and the search began yet again upon our arrival. Based on information from joggers and local neighbors, Officer Byrne escorted one of us to Beese Park. Unfortunately, this became a dead-end lead. Other total strangers on foot and in cars who had also seen her stopped what they were doing and joined in attempting to cordon off the general area where she might be found.

Officer Byrne agreed to continue the search in his squad car while we headed toward my office to check one additional time. We felt she might have somehow with some mysterious energy have discerned the directions to a place she knew as being safe. Only a few hundred feet from my office she responded to my whistles from hiding in the brush with a definite smile on her traumatized face.
At a time that our men in blue too frequently receive negative attention, we would like to publicly thank Officer Byrne and all of those unnamed citizens who took the time to join in the search and helped us find one of man’s best friends — our Luna.
