When it comes to basketball, if a player has game, a college will find him or her.

The latest example is 2013 North Chicago graduate Justice Moore, who joined the women’s basketball team at the College of Lake County during her sophomore year at school, and made it pay off.

Moore, a 6-foot-1 post player, just accepted a scholarship to play basketball the University of Mary, an NCAA Division II program in Bismarck, N.D.

Though Moore played on a CLC squad that finished 6-24, she averaged 12.1 points, 15.8 rebounds and 4.5 blocks. The latter two numbers put her in the top five in the nation among NCJAA Division II schools.

“Justice’s best basketball is ahead of her, and I know she will do well at Mary. It is a good program in a very good league, and they are lucky to get her,” said CLC coach Kyle Brokmeier, who is beginning his second year as coach.

According to University of Mary assistant coach Jason Schmitz, Moore may redshirt in 2015-2016.

Last year, University of Mary was 10-19 overall. It plays in the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference.

Schmitz said Moore already is on campus for the fall term.

“She is a fantastic person. So far she is working really hard. We are happy she is here,” Schmitz said.

Asberry heading to Europe: Waukegan professional heavyweight boxer Nick Asberry will head to Germany next month to work as a sparring partner and help Tyson Fury get ready for his world title fight against champion Wladimir Klitschko that will be held on Oct. 24 in Dusseldorf, Germany.

Fury, 26, has a 24-0 record and is 6-foot-9. He’s from the United Kingdom and is the mandatory challenger for Klitschko (53-3), who holds the WBA, IBF, WBO and IBO titles.

Earlier this year, Asberry served as a sparring partner for Bryant Jennings who was preparing to fight Klitschko in New York. Jennings lost a 12-round unanimous decision.

According to Ernie Brown, Asberry’s manager, these sparring and training opportunities will improve Asberry’s stature as a boxer. Currently 8-0, Asberry has yet to establish his ceiling in the ring, and he will not have a fight himself while he’s working with Fury.

Brown said the plan is to get Asberry a fight as soon as he gets back from Europe, perhaps in October. Asberry, a 6-5, 240-pounder, fights for promoter Bobby Hitz, who holds most of his cards at the Horseshoe Casino in Hammond, Ind.

CASA golf outing a success: CASA Lake County netted nearly $100,000 at two golf tournaments held this summer at Kemper Lakes Golf course, with 194 golfers participating. Earlier this year, the child-abuse organization netted $230,000 at a gala held on the grounds of the Ravinia Music Festival.

All of the funds raised for CASA will go to the mission of providing volunteer advocates for abused and neglected children. About 90 percent of event revenue goes directly into programs benefiting children. Last year, 312 CASA Lake County volunteer advocates served 558 young people.

For more information about CASA and how to become an advocate for defenseless children in need, call Mari Christopherson at (847) 383-6260, ext. 217. She said that children enter the child welfare system every day, and there is an ongoing need for volunteers to serve those children.
