Since Heaters are headlining Subterranean tomorrow, I knew for a while that I was going to write about this psych-rock trio, which hails from my hometown of Grand Rapids, Mich. And because some things just work out, the band conveniently has a new song out today called “Gum Drop.” It’s a vibrant, hazy rocker that falls somewhere near the reverb-heavy swirl of Tame Impala’s early stuff, but more relaxed and bluesy.
As someone who spent much of his formative years checking out shows around West Michigan whenever there was something happening (R.I.P. The DAAC), it’s refreshing to see an act as exciting as Heaters after I’ve long moved away. So Chicago, if you’re not at Billy Joel’s Wrigley Field show tomorrow, you have no excuse not to check these guys out at Subterranean. Actually, even if you are at the Billy Joel, you also have no excuse. Buy tickets here and listen to “Gum Drop” below.
In concert: Aug. 27 at Subterranean.
