For two weeks, Western Springs School District 101 Band and Orchestra members put off trips to the pool and friends’ houses and put down the video games to reconnect with string and band instruments.

The annual District 101 Band and Orchestra Summer Music Camp, which concluded last week, had students doing everything from learning patriotic tunes to creating stories using only music.

One happy-ending story created by string performers in a session last week was a dog falling off a cliff but being rescued by a helicopter.

Dawn Fiebrandt, director of the District 101 Band, said the camp gives students a chance to get reacquainted with instruments they may not have picked up during the summer months.

The camp is also an opportunity for students to have fun with music, said Stacy Turner, District 101 orchestra director, who has students create their own works and play an electric violin during the two-week session.
