If there’s one release I’d add to RedEye’s Favorite Chicago Albums of 2015, it’d be the self-titled debut from local indie pop outfit Varsity. That full-length tastefully treaded the line between rough-edged garage rock and saccharine pop, all while fronted by the personality-filled voice of frontwoman Stephanie Smith.
Now, Smith and her bandmates are back with another project: a split single featuring “Cult Of Personality,” which RedEye is premiering below, and B-side “So Sad, So Sad.” The A-side keeps the band’s signature charm while upping the songwriting ante. It’s an efficient, no-frills blast of fun with squealing riffs, poppy-but-not-precious vocals and what might be Varsity’s most undeniable hook yet.
Listen to the track below, and check out the band’s tour dates.
