Thirty-six people were taken into custody Sunday following a shooting and three-hour standoff with officers at a Matteson house party, according to police.

No injuries were reported in the incident, which began around 2:55 a.m. in the 900 block of Princeton Avenue and involved dozens of gunshots, Matteson police said.

Four handguns were recovered, police said, adding that “30 to 40 spent shell casings were observed surrounding the residence and strewn up and down Princeton Avenue.”

Police from multiple agencies responded, with the investigation centering around a party at a rental property. Police initially arrested 15 to 20 people but a three-hour standoff followed as others refused commands to peacefully exit, authorities said.

Two people were arrested near Route 30 and Willow Road after officers received a report of a Dodge Charger, in which two alleged gunmen were riding, fleeing the area, police said. Authorities have yet to release their names.

Two guns were found near the traffic stop and two others were recovered near the home, police said.

After several hours trying to negotiate with people inside the home, police said, the South Suburban Emergency Response Team was called to force entry to the house and end the standoff.

No officers were injured during the incident, police said.

The city’s building department has declared the property uninhabitable due to possible structural damage, police said.

The investigation is ongoing and Princeton Avenue wasn’t reopened until 1 p.m.
