You might want to head to Gold Coast for your late-night cravings.

The Halal Guys

49 W. Division St. 312-877-5575

Gold Coast just won the jackpot of drunk eats. The Halal Guys, a New York mainstay that started as a food cart, soft opens tonight at 6 p.m. and plans to serve the first 100 customers in line. The fast-service spot offers platters and sandwiches with chicken, gyro or falafel, and sides include fries and hummus or tahini with pita.

If it’s messy, saucy, meaty food you crave late at night (or at 11 a.m. when the shop opens Monday through Sunday), The Halal Guys will be your new best friend. The restaurant previewed their fare last night, so we scoured Instagram for the photos that tell the whole story. Here’s what you need to know before you hop in line tonight.

1. It’s messy. And by messy, we mean sauce will drip all over your hands, hunks of meat may end up in your beard and you’ll definitely want to grab napkins.

2. Two words: white sauce. Know it, learn it, love it. The creamy concoction is made with soybean and canola oil, egg yolk, vinegar and a handful of other ingredients. If you’re feeling super saucy (and you should be), ask for extra.

3. The hot sauce is HOT. Made with ground red pepper, vinegar, salt and additional spices, this red additive seems innocent enough, but don’t be fooled. Dot it on your platter or sandwich and proceed with caution.

4. You could share, but you shouldn’t. The platters, which are available with either one or two meat options (chicken, gyro, falafel) are massive. You might be tempted to split one with a friend, but you should absolutely order your own.

5. You can add jalapenos and olives to your plate. We recommend both.
