As members arrived for the Lake Central School Board meeting on Monday night in St. John, they were greeted by Kay Trapp and her husband, Dusty, with hugs.

Trapp, 90, the district’s former finance director, smiled as she told people the district is going to “tear my house down.”

Her “house,” the Kay Trapp Administration Building, is an office building converted from a house located at the northeast corner of the high school parking lot.

The building was named for Trapp to honor her for her long commitment to the district. Now that the building is being razed, the board wanted to find another way to recognize her. She was finance director from 1980 to 1984. Prior to that, she had been district treasurer since 1955.

“We have a meeting room where we will hold all of our principal meetings and other regional meetings, and this room will be the Kay Trapp Room,” said Superintendent Larry Veracco. The room is in the administrative wing adjacent to the tech center. “People will know you served the district well for a long time. You are an advocate.”

The board members stepped down from the stage to shake hands with the Trapps and present her with a plaque.

“Thank you, Kay, for all your service,” said Board President Don Bacso.

Trapp was all smiles as she told the board members it was easy to do her job all those years, because she liked what she did. “If you don’t like what you do, you don’t give the job the effort it deserves,” Trapp said.

The Kay Trapp Administration Building will be torn down by Thanksgiving, said Veracco. Administrators will move in waves from the Kay Trapp building to new offices in the high school and should be done mid-October.

In other business, Rob James, director of business services, announced that he will make a budget presentation on Sept. 8. A public hearing is scheduled for Sept. 21 and the budget is epected to be adopted at the first meeting in October, he said.

Meanwhile, the district will host an open house for public tours at 11 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 13 at Lake Central High School. Veracco said there will be a short presentation at about 2 p.m., “to thank everybody including the voters and taxpayers.”
