After Sunday’s off day, the Ravens were in full pads for Monday’s workout, which started at 10 a.m. and finished up at 12:45 p.m. It was one of the hottest days of camp and several Ravens struggled to deal with the heat. Ravens head coach John Harbaugh had the players take an extended water break a little more than halfway through practice.

The good and bad

After a couple of drops early in practice, rookie wide receiver Darren Waller made an acrobatic catch on a deep ball over Quinton Pointer. He then spun the ball, copying teammate Steve Smith Sr.‘s patented move, and earning a talk from Harbaugh who warned him about the potential of a penalty on the play. Waller’s day was done soon after as he walked to the locker room, seemingly done in by the heat. Rookie tight end Maxx Williams also left practice early.

Cooler heads prevail

It appeared that Smith Sr. was about to get into his much-anticipated first scuffle of practice as he mixed it up with cornerback Rashaan Melvin after the whistle. However, the two were separated before an altercation could develop.

On a mission

The blitz pickup drills with the running backs and linebackers are always among the most physical and heated exercises of camp. Today was no exception. Lorenzo Taliaferro stood up C.J. Mosley. Arthur Brown easily shed Terrence Magee. But the clear winner of the drill was second-year linebacker Zachary Orr, who won his individual matchups and beat Justin Forsett badly on one of the repetitions.

Walker has tough day

Ravens rookie cornerback Tray Walker has had a quiet training camp, missing some time with a hamstring injury. Monday was not the fourth-round pick’s day as he was beaten badly twice by Kamar Aiken and then burnt deep by Smith Sr. who was unable to haul in the Joe Flacco pass. After one completion, defensive coordinator Dean Pees yelled at Walker: “Tray, quit staring at the quarterback.”

Play of the day

The defense mostly got the better of the offense, satisfying Pees’ demand to force Flacco and company to settle for mostly underneath passes. However, Flacco did strike in the two-minute drill, hitting Jeremy Butler on a gorgeous back-shoulder pass down the right sideline. Butler also beat Pointer deep earlier in the practice.

Not how it was drawn up

Flacco fumbled a snap during 11-on-11 work, but he had enough time to pick the ball up and hit Aiken for a long touchdown. The quarterback then shrugged sheepishly before earning a high five from offensive coordinator Marc Trestman.

Making his case

Undrafted rookie free agent Brennen Beyer has an uphill battle to make the team, given the outside linebackers ahead of him on the depth chart. Beyer understands that he has to make an impact on special teams and he did just that Monday. On one play, Beyer tossed Andrew Bose on his back while covering a punt. He also was praised by special teams coordinator Jerry Rosburg for his positioning on another punt coverage play.

Injury report

The Ravens had several players who have been sidelined return to action, as wide receivers Aiken (leg) and Marlon Brown (back/hamstring), offensive tackle Darryl Baldwin (undisclosed) and defensive end DeAngelo Tyson (elbow) returned. Brown and Tyson’s participation was mostly limited to individual drills. Wide receiver Breshad Perriman (knee), offensive guards Kelechi Osemele (foot), John Urschel (concussion) and Robert Myers (concussion), linebacker Steven Means (leg) and cornerbacks Lardarius Webb (hamstring) and Asa Jackson remained out. Wide receiver Michael Campanaro and offensive tackle Jah Reid also missed their first practices of training camp for undisclosed reasons.
