Trinity Lutheran Church, 9701 S. Brandt Ave., Oak Lawn, will host its third annual Rally Day and Classic Car Show from noon to 4 p.m. Aug. 30.
Becky Evers has been a member of Trinity Lutheran’s congregation for about 12 years. She also is Trinity’s contact coordinator for the car show. When the church first came up with the idea in 2013 to host a car show, Evers said, “Trinity’s a small church and we were just looking for ways to get word out about it. So we came up with the idea of a car show. Cars are a big deal and people love them.”
About 300 people turned out for last year’s event, and Trinity is hoping for an even larger crowd this year.
“We had about 40 cars last year and we’re hoping to have even more this year. We have a block party permit for the 9700 to 9800 blocks of Brandt Avenue, so that’s where we line up the cars,” Evers said.
Advance registration is $15. Event day registration is $20 per entry.
Winners will be chosen from multiple divisions and presented with trophies. Scott McCauley will play a dual role as emcee and judge. McCauley is well known in the car show circuit, including from shows at Dukes Drive In, 8115 S. Harlem Ave., Bridgeview.
Dry weather is critical for outdoor car shows. Fortunately, it hasn’t rained during Trinity’s previous shows.
“Car show guys don’t like to bring their cars out in the rain, even if it’s only a drop of rain,” Evers said. “So if it rains, we’ll still have the rally and other events inside.”
The rally will feature food vendors — including one offering handmade root beer floats — plus music, face painting, inflatables, prizes, “crazy” bingo and bean bag tournaments.
“We’ll also have the old school cake walk — like musical chairs, which is always fun, and everybody walks away happy,” Evers said.
Trinity is appreciative of all of the local businesses that are sponsors for its car show. Proceeds benefit the church’s Christian education fund and the deficit reduction fund.
“We have a lot of great programs for the community and a great preschool program with a waiting list,” Evers said.
