A well-known barbecue restaurant will have a new location in the Gray’s Mill building in Montgomery this fall.
Harlan and Katie Logan will open the third location of their South Moon barbecue restaurant at the historic facility in Montgomery.
The Logans first came to the village earlier this summer and competed in an Aurora Area Visitors Bureau culinary competition, which focused on barbecue. Just days after winning the contest, the Logans came to look at the building that sits at the corner of Mill and River streets and decided it would be a good place for a restaurant.
Trustees approved the requested liquor license for the restaurant. Katie Logan said she and her husband plan to offer off-site catering services within the village and have signed a three-year lease agreement with the option to purchase the historic landmark building.
“They are bringing business to Montgomery, I think we should approve this,” said Pete Heinz during the board meeting held when the license was approved.
Logan said the restaurant will offer traditional barbecue.
“We slow cook and smoke it in the true southern barbecue tradition,” Logan said.
Her husband added that time is taken to make sure the food is first-rate.

“We use a dry rub and let it sit over night,” he said. “Then we mop it with a mild, sweet sauce.”
South Moon barbecue in Hinckley opened in 2009 with a second location in Sandwich opening in June.
“This will be a destination location. People will come from Chicago and all around to eat there,” said Mike Pfeiffer with the Aurora Area Convention Visitors Bureau, about the Montgomery location.
