A Des Plaines man has been charged with aggravated kidnapping and aggravated criminal sexual assault after holding a woman at knifepoint in an apartment she had agreed to rent from him, Des Plaines police said Saturday.

The 43-year-old woman told police Wednesday that she had been sexually assaulted earlier that evening by Farhad Tanzif, 60, at his residence in the 1000 block of South River Road in Des Plaines, police said.

Judge Adam Bourgeois set the bail for Tanzif at $5 million. He’s due back in court on Aug. 11. “You’re going to jail is what you’re going to do,” Bourgeois said to Tanzif.

The woman had answered an ad on Craigslist from Tanzif, met him at his residence and agreed to rent the apartment, police said. When she returned to the residence with some personal items, police said, Tanzif threatened her with a knife and sexually assaulted her.

After agreeing on terms of the rental arrangement, Tanzif mixed the victim a Pepsi and gin and encouraged her to settle into her room, according to Assistant State’s Attorney Michelle Cunningham. He then barged into the room, pinned her down and sexually assaulted her.

After that incident, Tanzif prevented the woman from leaving the house, knocked her down, dragged her into the living room and held her at knifepoint, the prosecutor said.

“The defendant told the victim that he does not like American women because they don’t listen,” Cunningham said in court Saturday.

Tanzif, 5-foot-2 inches tall and weighing 130 pounds, expressed little emotion in court. He was convicted of a misdemeanor batter charge in 2005.

Des Plaines police executed a search warrant at Tanzif’s residence Thursday afternoon, Des Plaines police Cmdr. Randy Akin said.

After filing the report Wednesday, the woman was taken to Advocate Lutheran General Hospital in Park Ridge and treated for injuries that weren’t life-threatening, police said.
