A part-time Orland Hills employee has been charged with theft after he allegedly bought nearly $3,000 worth of gasoline using a village credit card, according to court records.

Zachary M. Murphy, 19, of the 9200 block of Hunter Drive in Orland Hills, was arrested Monday and charged with felony theft.

Murphy “knowingly obtained unauthorized control” of a fleet fuel card and spent $2,920 over 53 visits to gas stations between June 11 and July 13, according to a complaint signed by the village’s assistant administrator, Brian O’Neill.

Murphy was one of nine part-time summer laborers hired May 19, earning $8.25 an hour, according to minutes from a Village Board meeting. He could not be reached Wednesday for comment on the charge.

A Cook County judge on Tuesday released Murphy on $25,000 bail. His next court date is scheduled for Aug. 27.
