From Aug. 6-8, the Canterbury Summer Theatre at Mainstreet Theatre will be putting on the haunting show “The Turn of the Screw.”
“The Turn of the Screw” is a strange and sinister show that is based on a Victorian gothic novella and filled with horror, suspense, and sexual themes.
Director Ray Scott Crawford does not recommend the show for children. “It’s nothing graphic,” Crawford says, “just a little darker of a subject matter. I’d recommend it for young adults to adults.”
In “The Turn of the Screw,” a governess travels to care for two recently orphaned children. The former children’s previous caretaker went through a series of unfortunate events and is cursed.
“It’s a suspenseful and scary show,” says Crawford.
“The Turn of the Screw” at Mainstreet Theatre serves as a change to the typical summer series lineup. “I think the summer is usually fluffy and this is different because it’s darker and with a little death,” said Crawford.
Tickets to Friday’s 8 p.m. show and Saturday’s 6:30 p.m. show are $16 each. Students college-aged or younger get 50% off of admission with valid ID. Seniors (62+) receive a $1 discount. Visit festivalplayersguild.org.
