The Association for Individual Development (AID) has treated a bed bug issue in its Aurora office for more than three weeks..

The association provides services to individuals with developmental, physical and mental disabilities and runs the Crisis Line of Fox Valley for those seeking help with issues like depression, anxiety and substance abuse.

The group became aware of a bed bug infestation at its crisis line call center at 1230 N. Highland Ave. about four weeks ago.

Although the bugs were only found in the call center, the entire building has gone through three chemical treatments in the last three weeks, association officials said.

Dogs were brought in on Friday to check the infestation status and still found some bugs, so a heat treatment will begin later next week.

“We’re hoping this one will be the charm,” said Joanne Furnas, vice president of Behavioral Health Services at the Association for Individual Development.

According to Furnas, only the crisis line employees have been exposed to the bugs. Those 15 full- and part-time employees are still working in the call center during the infestation.

The Kane County Health Department has sent precautionary information to the association about bed bugs, which was passed along to employees.

Furnas said they are making sure to educate employees on the steps being taken to fight the bed bugs and teaching them prevention measures for their own homes as well.

“We make sure that we do everything to keep our clients and employees safe,” Furnas said. “So, we’re doing as many treatments as needed, so there is zero issues going on from here.”
