Trooper Jacob Raupp was driving westbound just west of the Toll Road exit when traffic in the center lane in front of him slowed down, and Raupp was not able to slow down in time. His 2012 Chevrolet Tahoe struck a 2001 semitrailer pulling an empty flatbed. The semitrailer driver, Terry D. Shaw, 51, of Hannibal, Mo., was not injured, according to police. The release from the state police did not say when exactly the crash occurred.
Emergency crews had to extract Raupp from his vehicle, and he was then airlifted to Christ Advocate Hospital in Oak Lawn, Ill.
Raupp is a three-year veteran with the state police and serves on the Commercial Motor Vehicle Division. It was not clear where he is from.
Police shut down all lanes of the interstate after the crash, although they were reopened by 11:38 a.m.
