Online and mobile food ordering company GrubHub said Tuesday its second-quarter earnings surged on increases in active diners and food sales.

By the numbers: The company earned $9.4 million, or 11 cents per share. A year earlier, GrubHub reported earnings of $2.7 million, or 3 cents per share.

Revenue increased 47 percent to $88 million from $60 million in the same quarter a year earlier.

How they did it: GrubHub said the number of its active diners rose 42 percent to 5.9 million, while gross food sales rose 34 percent to $568 million.

Looking ahead: The Chicago company sees adjusted EBITDA of $23 million to $25 million in the third quarter on revenue of $85 million to $87 million. For the year, it sees adjusted EBITDA of $104 million to $112 million on revenue of $358 million to $364 million.

Investor reaction: In early trading after release of the results, shares of GrubHub were near flat at around $31.
