The 4th Annual LaPorte Night Bike Ride, promising a relaxing 13-mile ride under the stars, takes place July 24.

The event, which takes place on the streets of the city, is sponsored by LaPorte Parks & Recreation. Parks Superintendent Mark Schreiber said the first thing he wants people to know is that the ride is not a race.
“This is a ride-at-your-own-pace, leisurely ride and it is an opportunity to go under the stars and enjoy a bike ride. You can enjoy it with family and friends,” Schreiber said.
“We stress safety so you will need a helmet, headlight and taillight,” he added. “We ride on city streets and there will be some streetlights, but there are periods of darkness.”
Schreiber said the reason for the bike ride is simple: “We want to encourage people to bike.”
The LaPorte Night Bike Ride typically draws between 60 and 70 riders, although it can accommodate 300, he said.
“We would like to see some more people out there. Weather really dictates turnout. It’s most enjoyable when we have a nice clear moonlit ride,” Schreiber says.
Children are permitted, Schreiber said, but if they are 12 or younger, must be in a bike seat with an adult or on a tandem, due to safety.
The ride is $20 and participants get a t-shirt until supplies run out, he said. “We have refreshments for everyone after the ride.”
Registration begins at 9 p.m. and the ride starts at 10 p.m. It begins and ends at the Parks & Recreation office inside Soldiers Memorial Park.
