Detour signs are in place to route traffic around the closure that blocks the section of road between White Oak Lane in Munster and the entrances to Briar Ridge subdivision in Dyer and Schererville and Briar Creek subdivision in Munster.
Drivers heading south on White Oak Avenue from 45th Street in Munster will need to turn east onto Main Street towards Indianapolis Boulevard.
Drivers exiting Briar Ridge, Briar Creek and Cobblestones subdivisions will need to turn west towards Calumet Avenue to proceed on Main Street.
The project will remove an existing culvert and install a 72-inch and an 84-inch storm sewers. The Little Calumet River Basin Development Commission will pay for $697,000 of the $1.6 million project. Dyer, Munster and Schererville will divide the remainder of the cost and pay equally.
The road will likely be closed for as little as 35 days and possibly as many as 75, with weather acting as the wild card, officials said.
The storm sewer repair/improvement project is necessary because the storm sewer collapsed in Dyer on the afternoon of Aug. 23 when a heavy storm dumped more than 3.5 inches of rain in an hour.
