Elmwood Park police are investigating what they claim is a “road rage” incident involving gunfire that took place Saturday morning.

Elmwood Park Police Chief Frank Fagiano said the police department received a call of shots being fired at 4:55 a.m. July 18 in the area of 75th Avenue and Fullerton Avenue. When police inspected the area, Fagiano said they found seven gun shell casings in the area of 75th between Fullerton and the railroad tracks.

On July 19, a resident brought a gun shell casing into the Police Department that was found on the 2300 block of 73rd Avenue. Police canvassed that area and found another shell casing.

Fagiano said the shell casings found from both locations come from two different kinds of guns: one a 9mm handgun, the other a .40 caliber handgun. He said the spent casings are the possible result of an exchange of gunfire between two drivers.

“At this time, it appears to be road rage,” he said.

He believes the incident started in Chicago and made its way into the village.

Fagiano said police believe the drivers of each vehicle exchanged gunfire on the 2300 block of 73rd Avenue, headed west on Fullerton Avenue to 75th Avenue, going north, where more gunfire was exchanged between the drivers. He said the cars traveled further north, over the railroad tracks, and at Grand Avenue the two drivers split up, one going further north on 75th Avenue and the other heading east on Grand Avenue.

“We believe they were shooting back and forth at each other,” he said. “They were not shooting at any houses or shooting at any other people.”

Policed describe both cars as white, one possibly a Cadillac and the other a newer model Toyota Camry.

Fagiano said no one was reported injured and no property was damaged as a result of the incident in the area. No arrests have been made at this time.

“Our investigators are working on this and will continue working on this case,” he said.
