It’s all about rhythm as drum, drill and dance teams compete against one another at the 8th annual Show Up and Show Out event hosted by the Soul Steppers Drill Team from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m. July 18 at Michigan City High School.
Lyn Isbell, the founding director of the Soul Steppers Drill Team, said the 15-year-old team has been to competitions all over the nation. This event is the only one held in the state of Indiana.
“Audiences will get to experience different styles of drill teams from all over the country including New Orleans, Birmingham, Chicago, Kansas City, Cincinnati, Des Moines, Rock Island and other cities. It’s a huge event,” she said.
“Different cities come out with different styles of drumming and drills,” she explained. “Just within our own group, the Soul Steppers, we have three different teams including our elementary ages, teen-agers and a drum line.”
She said spectators will watch as 10 to 15 teams face off against one another in a battle of the beats.
“Teams will compete for cash and trophy awards in drill, drum and dance. It’s funny how you can tell where someone is from based on their style, like in Chicago it’s all about precision, and Memphis is fancy. In our dance category, it’s like the movie ‘Bring It,’ the majorette style, but we also have hip-hop, and it’s going to be awesome,” Isbell said.
Tickets can be purchased in advance for $10 at locations such as Michigan City Hall or Captain Ed’s Candy. Admission is $12 at the door, but kids ages 5 and under are free.
“It’s a family-friendly event and is part of the Michigan City Summer Festival. After the competition there will be a special performance from the award-winning Soul Steppers,” she said.
