Matthew Andrews thought he was shooting at rival gang members traveling through his neighborhood when he unloaded five rounds from a .32-caliber revolver just after noon Wednesday, prosecutors said during a hearing at the Leighton Criminal Court Building.
The two victims, both 21-year-old men, were shot while driving down the 7900 block of Artesian Avenue but continued on for a few blocks before crashing into a parked car, according to police.
One of the men was struck by a bullet in the head. He was taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn and remains in critical condition. He is expected to survive, though he is unable to speak, according to court records. The other man was not hit.
A handful of witnesses, who recognized Andrews because he lives just around the corner from where the shooting took place, identified him in a photo lineup. He later admitted to shooting at the car and attempting to ditch the gun in a sewer before running home, according to court records.
Judge Donald Panarese Jr. set bail for Andrews, of the 8100 block of South Artesian Avenue, at $750,000 during the hearing.
Andrews, who was charged with aggravated battery and discharge of a firearm, is scheduled to appear in court Thursday.
