Through a partnership with the Kane County Health Department, deputies are trained to administer the drug, which reverses the effects of opiates. Around 1:40 a.m. Friday, that training came in handy.
Kane County Sheriff Lt. Patrick Gengler said deputies were called to the 36W600 block of Bristol Road in an unincorporated area of St. Charles Township where a 25-year-old woman was apparently unconscious and not breathing on the side of the road.
Gengler said the woman’s boyfriend was attempting to do CPR on the side of the road when deputies arrived. Deputies continued CPR. After being told the woman was overdosing on heroin, they delivered a dose of Narcan.
According to Gengler, the woman began breathing on her own and was transported to an area hospital. He said the St. Charles Township woman is expected to survive.
“Just yesterday we shared an article on our Facebook page about the dangers of heroin and opioid abuse,” Gengler said. “We encourage the public, especially parents, to become educated on the dangers of opioid abuse which includes the dangers of prescription drug use and abuse as a gateway to heroin use.”
