With his second grand slam of the season in the second inning of Saturday night’s 7-2 victory over the Marlins Kris Bryant became the first Cubs rookie to hit two since Billy Williams in 1961.

Bryant also had a two-run blast in the first inning.

“The first at-bat, I swung at the first pitch, I got a good pitch to hit and I tried to be aggressive there with a runner in scoring position,” Bryant said.

“Then the second one, bases loaded, not trying to do too much. I obviously wasn’t thinking home run or anything like that, but worked a count, got a 3-1 count, a pretty good count to hit in, and got a pitch to hit.”

Bryant says he is going to the plate with confidence.

“I feel that way every time I step up to the plate,” he said. “That’s a good feeling to have, but obviously doing that in spring training gives me the confidence I can do that here and do it any time.”

Bryant’s first slam came against the Indians’ David Murphy on June 17 in Cleveland.

As for history, besides Williams and Bryant, Howard Earl accomplished the rookie two-slam feat for the Cubs in 1890.

Bryant also is the first Cub to hit a grand slam on the Fourth of July since Wildfire Schulte in 1911, according to STATS Inc.

Bryant’s six RBIs are the most for a Cubs rookie in a game since Anthony Rizzo had six on Sept. 16, 2012, against the Pirates.

First things first: Dexter Fowler has struggled lately in the leadoff position and is hitting .232 with just a .308 on-base percentage after a double and a walk in four plate appearances Saturday night.

Nevertheless, the center fielder insists he has not been pressing in the leadoff spot.

“It’s not a challenge; it’s what I have been doing my whole career,” Fowler said. “It is just taking it at-bat by at-bat. You just have to get a good pitch to hit. If you don’t get it, you don’t get it.”

Manager Joe Maddon maintains faith in the veteran who was acquired in an offseason trade with the Astros.

“His work has been great,” Maddon said. “He cares, he works. And when he goes, we go. I tell him that before every game: ‘You go, we go.’ It is incredible when he gets on base and scores a run, what our record looks like. It is going to come back to him and us regarding the offense.”

The switch-hitting Fowler entered the game hitting .210 (52-for-248) against right-handed pitchers and .340 (16-for-47) off lefties.

Fowler said he takes pride in his defense, even when he is slumping at the plate.

“There are always two sides to the ball,” he said. “You have your ups and downs in hitting, but there’s no slumping on defense.”

Maddon concurs.

“He has been playing really good defense. He just has not been effective as he can be hitting from the left side.”

Taking a break: The Cubs placed catcher David Ross on the seven-day disabled list (retroactive to Thursday) with a mild concussion. Ross took a foul ball off the mask Wednesday in New York.

“I had some nausea and some small symptoms that were going on the day after I got hit with the foul ball,” Ross said. “I got hit with a bat swing the day before … just some little things that you forget about. So for some precautionary reasons … it is nice for the seven-day DL.

“The main concern is just getting (hit with) another foul ball. I had that happen a couple of years ago and it put me down for about two months. I don’t want to go through that again.”

The Cubs called up catcher Taylor Teagarden from Triple-A Iowa to fill in for Ross. To make room on the 40-man roster, the Cubs moved infielder Tommy La Stella to the 60-day DL and designated pitcher Gonzalez Germen for assignment.

Soler system: Outfielder Jorge Soler will return to the ballclub for Sunday’s game after rehabbing a sprained ankle.

“We’re talking about it right now,” Maddon said before the announcement was made Saturday. “To me it is a matter of if he is healthy and he is seeing the ball.”
