A 17-year-old from Aurora is facing three felony weapons charges in connection with two shooting incidents that took place on Aurora’s West Side.

The teen, who is currently in the Kane County Juvenile Detention Center in St. Charles, was charged Monday with two counts of felony unlawful use of a weapon and a single count of possession of a stolen firearm.

Aurora Police Department spokesman Dan Ferrelli said the teen was taken into custody around 5 p.m. Monday after officers responded to reports of shots fired near Galena Boulevard and North Harrison Avenue. Witnesses said someone inside a white SUV apparently fired a BB gun out the window toward an unknown target. Nothing was struck and no one was injured.

Shortly after the shooting, the teen was found inside a white Chevrolet Trailblazer that was traveling northbound on Elmwood Drive near Plum Street. The SUV matched the description of the vehicle allegedly used in the shooting, Ferrelli said.

During the traffic stop, police located the 17-year-old, along with three other teens, ages 14, 15, and 17, inside the vehicle.

Ferrelli said officers believe that the same SUV was used in another incident that occurred an hour prior to the shooting outside a home in the 600 block of North Elmwood Drive.

Police said around 4 p.m. several people were standing in a yard on the block when someone inside a white SUV flashed a weapon and yelled gang slogans in their direction. Police believe the teen who has been charged and the three people inside the vehicle may have been involved.

According to Ferrelli, officers located a handgun and two BB guns inside the SUV during the traffic stop. Ferrelli said the handgun was reported stolen on June 25 from a home in the 2300 block of Goldenrod Court.

The teen has only been charged in connection with the aggravated assault on Elmwood Drive while the investigation continues into the incident at Galena Boulevard and North Harrison Avenue. The other three males inside the SUV were released to their parents pending further investigation.

Ferrelli said the second unlawful use of a weapon charge against the teen stems from a shooting that occurred on Sunday in the 800 block of Foran Lane when the teen allegedly fired a weapon at around 7:53 p.m., then ran from the scene with another person. Nothing was hit in that incident, which also remains under investigation.
