“I’m very much looking forward to a return to South Florida and Gulfstream Park. If I remember right, my last time there was the Breeders’ Cup of 1999,” said Espinoza, a native of Mexico City and the first Latino jockey to ride a Triple Crown champion. American Pharoah’s wins in the Kentucky Derby and Preakness Stakes were followed by his historic June 6 victory in the Belmont.
Espinoza’s mounts have won 3,220 races and more than $175 million in purses.
The Sunday Summit of Speed program is part of a holiday weekend of events at Gulfstream. Saturday’s July 4 celebration includes family activities beginning at 2 p.m. and the GirlsGotGame Handicapping Challenge and a Grand Illuminations celebration at 9 p.m.
On Sunday, Espinoza highlights a day of nine stakes races (four graded), including the $250,000 Princess Rooney (Grade II) and the $250,000 Smile Sprint (Grade II), both Breeders’ Cup Challenge “Win and You’re In” stakes.
