New Trier won seven straight state championships in boys lacrosse from 2005-11, then went two years without a title before winning it all again last year.
The Trevians have started another streak, defeating Glenbrook North 10-5 in the IHSLA championship Saturday at Naperville Central.
Steen Jorgensen scored three goals and had an assist as New Trier (18-4) won its 11th state title, and ninth in the past 11 years.
Glenbrook North (17-6) was making its first state final appearance, and seemed overwhelmed in the first half as New Trier took a 6-1 lead.
“The hot start is something we were working on all season,” Jorgensen said. “I’m just so excited. I’m a senior so I hope next year we can keep this rolling when I come back and watch one of the state finals.”
Chris Brower (2 goals, 2 assists) gave the Trevians a 1-0 lead in the first three minutes before the Spartans tied it on a goal by Hank Young.
No. 1 seed New Trier took control with its efficient passing and attack offense, tallying the next five goals, including two by Jorgensen.
“This senior class is probably one of the best classes we’ve had, they deserve it,” New Trier coach Tom Herrala said. “They worked really hard.”
Glenbrook North trimmed its deficit to 6-3 on a goal by Nick Hilgendorf with 8:35 to play in the third quarter. Jorgensen tallied a hat trick with his goal at 3:39 to extend the Trevians’ lead to 7-3.
No. 3 seed Glenbrook North rallied back with two goals to pull to within 8-5 with 5:39 left in the fourth quarter before New Trier scored twice in just more than a minute. Brower padded the Trevians’ lead at 9-5 with 2:41 to play.
“”I kind of just fell down and shot it while I was falling down, but I didn’t see it,” Brower said.
Kevin Mulhern finished the scoring with his goal with 1:31 left.
“We don’t think about streaks,” Herrala said, “but the goal at the beginning of the year every year is to win a state championship, so goal accomplished.”
