A controversial empty lot just off North Avenue in Elmwood Park is one step closer to being a parking lot, despite protests from neighbors.

The plan calls for the village to build a parking lot at 1612 N. 74th Court, behind a strip of businesses that includes Massa Italian Cafe and Gelateria — owned by Village Board member Angelo Lollino.

The plan got the go-ahead from Elmwood Park’s Economic Development Commission May 21. Lollino, who is a member of the Economic Development Commission, was absent.

Now, the proposal heads to the Elmwood Park Village Board for final approval.

Peter Volpe, chair of Elmwood Park Economic Development Commission, said he believes a parking lot the best use for the land.

“It’s a win-win for the community,” he said.

The lot was purchased and demolished by the village with the idea of using it to provide additional parking in that area, especially for customers visiting the restaurants and bars along North Avenue.

But some of the residents who live near the 1600 block of 74th Court have expressed their displeasure about the plan at several village meetings.

Since they found out about the lot, neighbors Elaine and Fred Norden have been against the idea, saying a house should be built on the lot. But at the May 21 meeting, Norden said it looked like the decision had already been made.

Volpe said there had been no other interest in the property for the last three years. He believes if the Village Board approves takes the commission’s recommendation and approves the project, it won’t be a hindrance to the residents.

He said if approved, there will be a privacy fence put up, along with plants and shrubbery around the parking area. He also said that there will be less traffic and parking on the residential street as a result of the additional parking.

“It would be a nice addition to the block,” Volpe said.
