Flossmoor police on Friday were continuing to investigate an after-school fight that was captured on video and made the rounds on the Internet after it was posted to an Instagram account, police said.

The fight, which took place after school Wednesday at Parker Junior High School, involved two boys, one of whom was taken to a hospital afterward, according to Flossmoor Police Chief Mike Pulec. He said Friday he didn’t know whether the boy was admitted to the hospital, nor did he have information on the boy’s condition.

Pulec said the fight took place between 2:40 and 2:50 p.m. The boys fled as school personnel approached. One boy, located about a block away, was taken to the office of the school nurse, who recommended that a doctor examine him, Pulec said.

The video shows one boy straddling the other, who is lying on his stomach and attempting to cover his head to protect it from punches.

Pulec acknowledged that schoolyard fights are not uncommon but said this one was more serious because a student was taken to the hospital.

Flossmoor School District 161 Supt. Craig Doster confirmed there was an incident at the school, 2810 School St., which serves sixth-, seventh- and eight-grade students. He said school officials were “in the middle of the investigation” but declined to comment further.

Pulec, who said police learned of the fight from a parent, said investigators were trying to determine whether the students were mutual combatants or whether one “came up and started striking” the other.

If there was wrongdoing, Pulec said, police have a range of potential responses that include convening a peer-review panel and petitioning the offender into juvenile court.
