Tour de Highland once again will offer a 10-mile ride for those bike-trail ready and an eight-mile ride for those whose legs aren’t quite awake from winter. Highland Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Mary Luptak said the ride will start and end at the Wicker Park Pavilion and take riders around the high school to 45th Street, then north through the Arbor Hill section.
“We take it under the tunnel and then along Highland’s portion of the trails, and then we have a nice cookout planned for when everyone returns,” she said.
Last year, 182 people took part in the annual tour, she said. The longer trail has gravel on some of its paths, but the others are smooth asphalt.
Started in 2009 by the town’s Centennial Committee, the chamber took it over three years ago to help promote business in town, Luptak said. And most of the returning riders aren’t necessarily kids trying to burn off some energy or lose the so-called “Freshman 15,” either.
“A lot of people who come back year after year are over 50,” she said.
Proceeds from the ride benefit the School Town of Highland’s Dollars for Scholars scholarship program, Luptak said.
