Five drivers were arrested for drunk driving, another 94 received tickets for not wearing seat belts and 16 others were arrested for drug- or alcohol-related incidents in Plainfield police’s recent 14-day “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” and “Click it or Ticket” campaigns.

This year’s number of arrests and tickets is similar to previous years, according to traffic Sgt. Eric Munson.

“Everything stays the same,” he said. “There’s no big spike.”

Asked whether the department is happy with this year’s results, he replied, “You’re not getting what you want – voluntary compliance (by drivers of fastening seat belts and driving sober).”

This year’s program lasted from May 11 to 25 — through Memorial Day weekend — and was at least the 15th campaign conducted by Plainfield police, he said.

Three drivers were arrested for drunk driving and another two for Zero Tolerance — being intoxicated and younger than 21.

Besides the 94 seat belt violation tickets, five people were arrested for possession of marijuana, six for possession of drug paraphernalia and five for underage consumption of alcohol by a minor.

Other local and state law enforcement agencies participated in the crackdown. The campaign included high-visibility enforcement, seat belt enforcement zones and roadside safety checks, according to Munson.

The two campaigns are funded by federal traffic safety funds, through the Illinois Department of Transportation, and were run statewide.
