Some storm damage in southwest suburban Summit on Tuesday was likely due to a “very brief,” small tornado, the National Weather Service announced Wednesday.
The tornado, which had peak winds of about 75 mph, lasted about a minute, starting at 1:08 p.m. Tuesday, and traveled northeast less than a half-mile, from near 73rd Avenue and 63rd Street to about 60th Street and Harlem Avenue, according to the weather service.

The weather service determined that the storm was an EF0 tornado after doing a ground survey and checking O’Hare International Airport radar data. An EF0 tornado is the weakest classification of a tornado.
“The majority of the damage was to trees, with several large branches down and a couple of weaker hard wood trees snapped,” the weather service said in a statement Wednesday. “There was also some minor roof damage and a wooden fence partially downed.”
Earlier Tuesday, an EF1 tornado with winds of up to 100 mph hit areas including Henry and Atkinson, according to the weather service. The five-minute tornado, which touched down at 9:59 a.m., traveled about 4 miles, and mainly damaged trees and farm outbuildings.
