A teen was shot, his brother knocked down and beaten and a third man was stabbed in fights and shooting on Gary’s far west side late Tuesday night, police said.

Police said they see signs of more trouble brewing in the Brunswick area from a dispute they say began at West Side High School.

Two young men were arrested as police searched the area for suspects involved in the violence. Michael Mendez was charged with carrying a handgun without a license and a juvenile was released to his mother at the police department, the report states.

About 10 p.m., a 25-year-old man told police he was chased by a group of men while he was walking from a gas station on Clark Road. He said they knocked him down with a piece of wood, then kicked and punched him after he was down on the ground. He flagged down police near 6th Avenue and Ralston Street and asked for medical help. He was treated at the Methodist Hospitals Northlake campus, as was his brother, 17, who was shot in his side while visiting friends at 7th Avenue and Hovey Street about 10:30 p.m., the police report states.

About the same time, a 19-year-old man said he saw men fighting in the same location of the shooting and was struck in the side. He learned at the hospital he had been stabbed, the report states.

Detective Cpl. Edward Gonzalez is investigating the incidents.
