A man shot multiple times outside his home in Aurora early Sunday morning died of his injuries Tuesday night, Aurora police said.
Darnell Eaton, 56, of the 1300 block of East New York Street, was pronounced dead at 8:39 p.m. Tuesday at Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, Aurora police said Wednesday.
According to Aurora Police Department spokesman Dan Ferrelli, police are still investigating the incident, and no motive has been established. He said it does not appear that Eaton or a 58-year-old man he was with were the intended targets of the attack.
Police were called around 2:05 a.m. Sunday to the 1300 block of East New York Street where Eaton and a second man were found inside the home suffering multiple gunshot wounds.
Eaton was most seriously injured after being struck in the abdomen, Ferrelli said. The 58-year-old man was struck in his hand, hip and left leg.
Ferrelli said a vehicle in the driveway was also hit multiple times.
The men told police they were leaving through the back door of the home when someone standing in the northwest corner of the home’s backyard began firing toward them, Ferrelli said.
After they were both struck, the men ran inside the home.
Ferrelli said the suspect, identified as a man in his early 20s, was seen running northbound from the scene. Police think he got into a light-colored pickup truck or SUV that was parked on Calhoun Street, and fled the area in a northbound direction.
Ferrelli said the man with Eaton continues to be treated for gunshot wounds at an Aurora hospital.
The fatal shooting was one of three shootings in Aurora over the long holiday weekend. No other injuries were reported.
