More than 1,000 people crowded into Elmwood Park High School’s gymnasium Sunday to see students say goodbye to their alma mater, but hello to the future.

That’s how Luis Diaz, 18, sees it. He was one of 229 students who participated in the high school’s May 17 graduation ceremony.

He’s happy that his high school days are behind him because he’s ready to mark his own course in the world.

“I feel kind of nervous about what’s next, but excited at the same time,” he said. “I know college is going to be fun and I know I’m going to have to study.”

Speeches were made at the graduation by the school’s valedictorian, Abigail Bitterman, and the salutatorian, Stanislaw Szydlo.

Elmwood Park Community Unit School Board Member Frank Parisi also gave a speech to the class of 2015 stressing that they make “integrity” a big part of their lives.

“Integrity is something important in your life and it’s needed,” he said. “No matter what you do at work or with your family you have to have integrity. The only thing you can guarantee in life is your word.”
