Cayetano Sandoval had been returning home to his wife on Dec. 12, 2013, after a night shift at the Avondale bakery where he worked for 20 years, prosecutors said Saturday.
But just before 2 a.m., Sandoval, 68, was attacked by two people, beaten and ultimately shot to death, said Assistant State’s Attorney Danny Hanichak in court Saturday.
Joshua Johnson, 23, of Elk Grove Village, was charged with first-degree murder and attempted robbery in Sandoval’s killing. Johnson, who appeared in court Saturday, held Sandoval down and went through his pockets while another person beat Sandoval and demanded money, Hanichak said.
“The victim was heard by witnesses (to be) screaming for help,” Hanichak said.
The other attacker, who hasn’t yet been charged, then stood over Sandoval and “fired several shots,” hitting him four times in the torso. Sandoval was pronounced dead later that morning, the prosecutor said.

The shooting in the 1900 block of North Spaulding Avenue in Logan Square, was caught on surveillance video and also witnessed by several neighbors “who were looking out their windows at or around the time of the murder,” the prosecutor said.
Five 9-millimeter shell casings were found at the scene, Hanichak said.
Officers arrested Johnson on Friday in Rolling Meadows after learning he would be at the courthouse there for an unrelated case, according to court documents.
On Saturday, Judge Peggy Chiampas ordered Johnson held without bail.
Johnson, who lives in 1900 block of Oakton Street in Elk Grove Village, is due back in court Monday.
Johnson has two felony convictions, according to court documents, including a 2012 burglary in DuPage County and a 2011 attempted residential burglary charge in Cook County.
According to prosecutors, he was discharged from parole in 2013.
