player ready...Tweets. A word that used to just mean bird calls!
Did you grow up listening to recorded bird calls like I did, because your parents were obsessed with birds? Does the thought of spotting a rare feathered friend send shivers of excitement up your spine? Did you know that the Northern Cardinal is our state bird? Then plan now to take in one of the Citizens for Conservation’s “Barrington Area Spring Bird Walks & Hikes!” These refreshing nature walks have been successfully cosponsored by Audubon Chicago Region and Citizens for Conservation (CFC) for a number of years; in part because Northern Illinois is blessed with a multitude of bird species – enough to satisfy any bird lover!
These combined “natural forces” (the Audubon and CFC) once again invite the public to “get to know nearby nature with renowned Barrington area naturalist Wendy Paulson.” Ms. Paulson has been guiding bird walks for over 30 years, in Illinois, New York City, and Washington, D.C., has taught bird classes in many locations, and has been highly involved with numerous conservation groups.
“We are so fortunate that for four years Citizens for Conservation and Audubon Chicago Region have been able to sponsor bird walks by Wendy Paulson for residents of the Northwest Suburbs. Wendy has been a birder for over 40 years… On a recent bird walk at Baker’s Lake as many as 50 species were identified, including white pelicans, a bald eagle, Bonaparte gulls, and the common loon. The bird walks are always a wonderful adventure,” said Sam Oliver of CFC.
The remainder of this year’s walks are at the following locations, dates and times:
May 22, 7:30 a.m.: Penny Road South* (Penny Road Pond parking lot, less than a mile west of the Old Sutton and Penny Road intersection)
May 29, 7 a.m.: Galloping Hill* (Penny Road Pond parking lot, less than a mile west of the Old Sutton and Penny Road intersection)

June 21, 5:30 p.m.: Longmeadow* (north side of Longmeadow Drive off Bateman Road)
* Indicates a more strenuous hike.
And, although anyone may attend, free of charge, you are requested to RSVP to Dan Jacobson at [email protected]. Or call 312-453-0230, ext. 2002. Jacobson said that space was limited, and that by reserving your spot, you allow the group to contain potential noise and other disruptions to the environment.
The morning of your walk, please be sure to check the Citizens for Conservation website for any last minute changes or cancellations due to inclement weather at citizensforconservation.org. Then, wear your waterproof boots, and bring your binoculars! You are in for a real “tweet!” (Sorry, I couldn’t resist!).
