A local Girl Scout troop’s bake sale has earned the group special recognition.
Members of Girl Scout Troop 40510, out of St. Celestine School in Elmwood Park, were recently recognized for their work on a project to raise money for Ronald McDonald House at Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood. With cash from a bake sale and other donations, they were able to raise $1,000 to help pay for the renovation of the house’s kitchen area.
In January, the troop had a bake sale that raised $880; they added $120 from the troop’s reward money from selling Girl Scout cookies to reach their goal of $1,000.
As a result of their hard work, each member of the troop was recognized at May 11 service unit meeting at Elmwood Park Public Library, where various Girl Scout Troops in the area meet. Each of troop 40510’s six members received a certificate and a Bronze Award to go on their uniform. The Bronze Award is one of the Girl Scouts’ highest honors.
Livia Krzak, the troop’s leader, said she’s been working with most of the girls for at least six years. She said they came up with the fundraiser idea.
“It was something they wanted to do,” she said. “I’m very proud of them.”
Troop member Hannah DeCicco, 10, said raising the money took a lot of time, but she enjoyed it.
“It was really fun,” she said.
Maddie Krzak, 10, considered this a start of a positive routine.
“It’s a new experience and I believe we can learn a lot from this in the future in terms of volunteerism,” she said.

Diane Bronoski, whose daughter, Rebecca, is a member of the troop, said she was proud of the group’s accomplishment.
“These girls have been together since kindergarten,” she said. “They worked very hard and were committed to it and dedicated. They have a great leader in Livia; she’s the one that keeps them together.”
