Two fifth-grade students in Montgomery got a close-up view of politics when they were made the Mayors of the Day in the village earlier this week.
Isabella Bobe of McDole Elementary and Itssel Garcia of Lakewood Creek Elementary shared the honor.
The two wrote the winning essays the village promoted with the question “If you were mayor of Montgomery I would….” Filling in the rest of the sentence was the assignment given to dozens of students who entered the contest.

“I would like to be a teacher,” said Isabella during a break at the Village Board meeting this week.
“The whole class did it as an assignment,” said Itssel.
Isabella said she has lived in the village for seven years and would like to develop a picnic each summer. She also said the event could bring people together and help those who are new meet their neighbors.
Itssel said if she were mayor for the day, “I would try to make it perfect. Some ways to make Montgomery better is to create a recycle park, fix roads and add a Montgomery Market.”
Both girls received a gift certificate for pizza and a wristband for rides during Montgomery Fest this August.
