GRIFFITH – Former Safety Commission President Jim Marker is the town’s new council member.

Marker, 48, replaces Glen “Bud” Gaby, who died in early April after a long battle with cancer. Marker was the only person to apply for the position, though others expressed interest in it, Griffith Republican Chairman Tom Wichlinski said.

Marker was voted in unanimously by 10 of the town’s 13 precincts during a townwide caucus Saturday morning and also will fill the ballot position for the first district in November, facing Democratic candidate Larry Stassin.

“I’m honored,” Marker said. “Bud is one of the finest human beings I’ve ever known, and I’m honored you’ve chosen me to follow in his footsteps. They’re big shoes to fill.”

Marker said he is a “good listener” and vowed not to let Griffith residents down and always put their needs first.

Town Council President Rick Ryfa, a Republican in Ward 3, welcomed Marker aboard.

“Remember, you’re representing not just yourself and your family, but all the people of Griffith,” Ryfa said. “You’re going to be asked to hit the ground running Tuesday (during the council’s study session.)”

Marker said his position on the Town Safety Commission will be filled, but for now, will be overseen by Ryfa and Councilman Stan Dobosz, a Democrat from Ward 5. Marker said he’ll continue to make crime reduction a hallmark of his position.
