Lake Forest College remained alive in the NCAA Division III softball regional it’s hosting this weekend by winning one game and leading in a second when the game was suspended by rain and lightning late Friday afternoon.

The Foresters rallied from a 2-0 deficit to beat Wisconsin-Whitewater 3-2 in 11 innings, and then led North Central 2-1 in the top of the seventh when the game was halted by rain and lightning. It will be finished at 11 a.m. on Saturday, and the winner will then take on Hope.

In Friday’s first game, Hope from Michigan beat North Central 5-0.

Currently, Hopes it 2-0 in the four-team, double-elimination tournament, while Lake Forest and North Central are 1-1. Whitewater went 0-2 and has been eliminated.

In Lake Forest’s win, Mundelein grad Alex Hemmer’s two-out, two-run double in the bottom of the 10th tied the game at 2-2, and Lake Forest won it in the 11th on a sacrifice fly.

In the game against North Central, the Foresters fell behind 1-0 on an unearned run, but scored twice in the bottom of the sixth on a two-run single by Kaleigh Ambrose.

In the top of the seventh, the first North Central batter walked and the second hitter struck out. That’s when the game was stopped.

The winner of the Lake Forest-North Central game will have to beat Hope twice Saturday to win the regional and advance to the tournament’s Sweet 16.

Boxing fans who want to watch undefeated Lake County heavyweight Nick Asberry fight dangerous Lyle McDowell in a six-round match on Saturday, May 16 at the Horseshoe Casino in Hammond can purchase tickets from Asberry’s trainer, Mateen Ahmad, by contacting him at (847) 507-3565.

This will be Asberry’s first six-round bout. He has won seven straight four-rounders. In his last fight, Asberry was in big trouble in the third round against Grover Young, but regrouped to win Round 4 and take a decision.

McDowell, a southpaw who is billed as “Iceman,” is coming off a victory last November when his fight was stopped in the fourth round of a scheduled 10-rounder. That win earned McDowell a title belt as the Universal Boxing Federation All-Americas champion.

The 24-year-old Asberry is moving up to the six-round level in an attempt to accelerate his career. The 6-foot-5, 240-pounder has a 7-0 record in four-round fights but has recorded just three knockouts.
