Two people were charged with felony retail theft Thursday after allegedly shoplifting more than $1,300 worth of items with an infant in tow, Aurora police said.
Police were called to Kohl’s, 4300 block of Fox Valley Center Drive, around 7 p.m. for reports of two people who had attempted to leave the store without paying for bags of merchandise.
When officers arrived, Tijon Martin, 28, of Aurora, and Jason Thomas, 29, of Oswego, were waiting in the loss prevention office. Store security told police that Martin and Thomas were seen bringing dozens of items into a dressing room and then not exiting with those items in hand. Employees said the two made several trips back and forth which made their behavior stand out, police said.
Once inside the dressing room, police said Thomas allegedly shoved the merchandise into Kohl’s bags and then attempted to leave the store without paying for them.
Martin allegedly left the dressing room with no bags in hand, but with an infant in a stroller and a backpack.
Security officers said Thomas left the store first and Martin trailed behind him. The two were stopped by store employees, who called police.
Inside the bags police found hundreds of dollars worth of children’s clothing. Men’s and women’s clothing, towels, candles, shoes and other items were also allegedly stowed away inside Thomas’ Kohl’s bags.
Both Martin and Thomas were charged with felony retail theft, police said. The cost of the items they allegedly attempted to take was $1,303.
