A man previously questioned regarding an April shooting in Aurora is now facing felony charges for allegedly firing the gun, Aurora police said.

Ismael Herrera, 21, 800 block of Pierce Street, Aurora, was charged with shooting a weapon during the early morning hours of April 26 near Wood Street Park.

According to Aurora Police Department spokesman Dan Ferrelli, Herrera and two other men were spotted by a patrol officer speeding from the scene of the shooting around 3:45 a.m.

The patrol officer had heard the shots and began to follow the vehicle. Ferrelli said the driver of the vehicle stopped in the 900 block of Solfisburg Avenue. Inside the vehicle police located Herrera and two men, ages 17 and 18, police said.

All three men were ordered out of the vehicle and taken into custody for questioning, police said. They were eventually released without charges.

Inside the vehicle police located a weapon that came back stolen out of Kane County. Several spent shell casings were found in the roadway across from Wood Street Park, Ferrelli said. Nothing had been struck by any bullets in the shooting incident.

Following a continued investigation into the shooting, the Kane County State’s Attorney’s Office authorized charges and Herrera was taken into custody on May 1.

Ferrelli said the investigation is ongoing and additional charges have not been ruled out in the incident.
